Although there are no licensing, registration or certification requirements in some states, if you want to be prepared to perform well in your job, then there are several options for you to consider for paralegal certification.

How Can You Get Your Paralegal Certification?

The most common and convenient way of obtaining a certification is through a Paralegal Certification Program at an online university or nearby campus. While each program or online program has its own requirements, they basically all boil down to this: they allow you the flexibility of taking the classes online, downloading the course material and homework and taking the exams online, all from the comfort and convenience of your home, at your own pace. As most aspiring paralegals (or paralegals trying to get the certification) work full time during the day, the convenience and flexibility offered by online institutions cannot be matched for Paralegal Certification.

First, the one year that you spend as an “apprentice” or “paralegal-in-training” can be better spent by getting your paralegal certification or degree. Once you have the certification or degree, you instantly become more qualified, maybe even more so than a legal assistant with one year of experience under his/her belt. Second, if you leave your firm as a legal assistant halfway through the year, it is unclear, whether you can get “partial credit” if you worked half a year at one firm, and then half a year at another firm.
Nevertheless, here is what most successful Paralegals have acquired:

• a college B.A. or B.S. degree, and one full year of law related work experience under the supervision of a licensed attorney who has been a member of the State Bar  for at least the three preceding years and who has signed a written declaration that the candidate is qualified to perform paralegal task; or
• certificate of completion from a paralegal program at, or a degree from, a post-secondary institution that requires the successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester, or equivalent, units in law-related courses or
• paralegal certificate obtained through a paralegal studies program approved by the ABA or from an accredited college or university

There are a number of ways of getting this Paralegal Certification. While it’s not absolutely necessary to have such a certification or degree – say, if you already qualify as a paralegal under state law because you have worked for years at a law firm, or if you start out as a legal assistant, having it certainly makes you more competitive, especially with the larger law firms, or if the job market for paralegals is tight.
